Making Change Is Hard — We Know How to Help

Addictions are one of the most difficult struggles any one of us will ever face. The conditions that set the stage for addiction can be deep in our past, not just personally but genetically, and once we get stuck in a pattern of behaviour for a while, it can get truly hardwired – into our brains and bodies.

This is not about having enough ‘willpower’ to kick a bad habit. This is about changing automatic reflexes in the brain, learning new coping skills, and discovering the traumas, historical beliefs and experiences that set the stage for this to take hold.

Our Approach to Addiction Therapy

With decades of experience between us, working in residential treatment programs, community health teams, and private practice, we have seen and treated it all. From severe opiate dependencies, alcoholism in dozen different forms, to gambling, sexual compulsions, and video gaming – addictions can take hold of us in many ways, but also with very similar themes.

12- step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous are absolute blessings for this world, and they can work really well for many people. But they are so generalized that without personal guidance and specific help to target individual problematic patterns, groups and meetings can be too slow, too frustrating, and too impersonal. And frankly, there are just real limitations in what it seems to be able to do for a person. We are not interested in “white-knuckle” sobriety. This therapy is about helping you to be empowered to make your own choices and to truly thrive in life.

Here at Wise Path Counselling, we know what you get and what you don’t get in treatment centers, community programs and 12-step groups. We are here to provide the individualized depth therapy that you may not receive in those other contexts. And we can also continue your maintenance in the period of transition, or to help you to avoid costly rehabilitation programs. Therapy with us focuses on helping you:

  • Identify and heal underlying trauma and emotional pain
  • Develop new coping strategies and self-awareness
  • Rebuild confidence, connection, and meaning in life
  • Transition smoothly from inpatient care or avoid costly residential programs altogether

We use evidence-based therapies such as:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS)
  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Trauma-Informed and Mindfulness-Based Approaches

If you are willing to work hard, listen very honestly to your own answers, and have the courage to face some of the discomfort inside you, then we can help you get to a place where you have more choice and power in your life – permanently.

Our clients are highly successful in their ability to gently let go of their addictions and to take back the lives that they truly want. If you want to talk to us to see if one of our therapists is a good fit for what you are looking for, book a consultation today and we’ll get things rolling.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is addiction?2025-08-26T16:50:38-04:00

Addiction is a chronic condition characterized by compulsive engagement with a substance or behavior despite harmful consequences. It’s not just about lack of willpower—addiction alters brain chemistry, especially in areas related to reward, motivation, and impulse control. Whether it’s drugs, alcohol, gambling, or even technology, addiction often stems from a complex mix of genetic, psychological, and environmental factors.

What is the best way to treat addiction?2025-08-26T16:50:51-04:00

Addiction treatment is multifaceted and tailored to the individual. It often includes a combination of psychotherapy, medical support, peer groups (like 12-step groups), and lifestyle changes. Common approaches include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, ACT, IFS and sometimes medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for substance use disorders. The goal is not just abstinence, but long-term recovery and improved quality of life.

In our experience as counsellors, the most effective long-term treatment for addiction has been therapy that has addressed attachment trauma and sees addiction as a protective response, such as IFS.

When is inpatient addiction therapy appropriate?2025-08-26T16:50:27-04:00

Inpatient treatment is recommended for individuals with severe addiction, those at risk of overdose, or people who need a structured environment to safely detox and begin recovery. It provides 24/7 medical and emotional support, which can be crucial for those with co-occurring mental health issues or unstable living situations.

Can I recover from addiction without professional help?2025-08-26T16:50:59-04:00

While some individuals do recover on their own, professional support significantly increases the chances of long-term success. Addiction affects brain function and behavior, making it difficult to “just quit.” Therapy provides tools to manage cravings, address underlying trauma, and build a support system. Even if you’re not ready for full treatment, talking to a counselor or joining a peer group can be a powerful first step.
